Zero 7

Date: 07/06/06

Venue: ABC2

First time in the big hall of the ABC venue (home of Glasgow’s biggest Disco Ball), and what better band to pop my cherry….Zero 7.

For those of you (unfortunate enough) that don’t know about Zero 7, here is a quick history lesson, Zero 7 is a downtempo styled musical duo comprising of Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker from the United Kingdom. They have been kicking about for a while now, had their first LP “Simple things” out in 2001 which was nominated for the Mercury Music award, and undeservedly didn’t win. The second release “When it Falls” came out in 2004. The band’s songs feature vocals from Mozez, Sia Furler, Tina Dico, Sophie Barker, José González, and for the first time, Henry Binns providing backing vocals on the third album, The Garden.

The support act were called Fink, I liked them, just 3 guys playing an acoustic set, but down very well, maybe worht checking out.

Zero 7 take to the stage around 9ish. The lovely Sia is the first vocalist out with the band and launch straight into “You’re My Flame” from the current Long Player “The Garden”, a few more tracks from her sultry voice before Swedish born Argentinian Mr José González takes to the stage. Its his first time working with the Zero boys, but what a performance, that man can sing, and sing well as well as play guitar. As he only has sung on “The Garden” thats the tracks that he performs live, including my personal favorite “Left Behind”.

Sia is back on and off stage all night treating us to her slinky dance moves, excellent voice and cute little leotard to allow her to dance the Charleston/Highland Fling whilst she performs “Somersault” from the second album.

I will admit, it was a tiny bit disapointing that the boys didn’t have Tina Dico, Sophie Barker and Mozez with them so tracks like “In the Waiting Line”, “Warm Sound” and “Home” were not played tonight, but I forgive that small thing as Sia was perfectly able to sing the biggest single “Destiny” by herself, you didn’t even notice that Sophie was not there!

Sia also got to play “Breathe Me” from her excellent solo album, “Colour the Small One”

The sound was excellent at the venue, I was a tad skeptical after the (in my view) dissapointing performance I had witnesed by Dinosaur Jr a couple of weeks previous in the smaller hall, but every cool little bleep and sqealch noise was heard clearly tonight.

I really enjoyed the gig, this was my 3rd time seeing them live, and it won’t be my last.

PS: For those of you that know me, you will be pleased that I fought the urge to run on stage and propose to Sia again, maybe next time!!!

GI :)
