Ugly Duckling

Date: 06/11/06

Venue: King Tuts Wah Wah Hut

For those that don’t know, Guy’s partner in crime, The California Trouser Snake has landed a job abroad where he will get to Snowboard, party to the early hours of the morning and maybe even do a little work ;) (LUCKY BARSTEWARD) So as he has been accompanying me to many a gig over the past couple of years, I thought it only right that I take him out to a quality gig, so UD fitted that description perfectly.

Every time i have seen UD live they always have a hip hop support act. The first time is was Speech Defect and the legendary Pigeon John. Last time it was one of my new favorites, Giant Panda. This time however they had Imperial Leisure. Not quite hip hop, just a little mixed with some Ska, reggae and rock to produce a very entertaining, lively opening to the show. Once more the crowd was warmed up nicely for the appearance of UD.

Was a bit dissapointed in the crowd size. I had expected a little more interest from the glasgow hip hop community, after all People Under the Stairs was sold out and UD are just as good (if not better) than those guys in my opinion.

Still, smaller crowd or not Andy C, Dizzy and Young Einstien managed to rock the crowd for their whole set. I think the Duckling are probably my favorite Hip Hop act and it is always a pleasure to see them live. Tonight was no exception tracks were played from all the LP’s including my favorites “Turn it Up”, “Pass It On” and “Smack”. Dizzy didn’t do his usual Hardcore Gangsta Rapper routine and “Mr Tough Guy” was not played, still the gig was excellent. They got a scottish guy who claimed he could rap on stage. I thought he would crash and burn, but give it up for Alf-Alfa, the boy stood his ground to the point where Andy wanted to kick him of the stage for showing the duckling boys up!!!

Einstein was his usual turn table wizard and was of course accompanied by his world famous Dookie Gold Rope, which he put on while playing “Eye on The Gold Chain”. The boys also had a young lady up on stage and embarrassed her with Andy and DIzzy’s awful chat up line like “Girl, do you work for the Royal Mail, coz I swear you were checkin’ out my package” before playing “Pick Up Lines”.

Always a pleasure to see the boys, hopefully see them again soon.
