So first thing first it being at King Tuts we had to sit through two feckin school bands with their yoof club fan base. Screaming damp teenage girls (calm down G.I.) cheering on their average boyfriends. Not to mention the number of proud, but bemused, parents in the cheering section.
What is it with KTWWH that even when the main act brings a decent support (last time I saw EL it was The Paddingtons), we have to sit through substandard Buffy background music for an hour. Not good!
So Eastern Lane…. excellent again, as the lovely Rona put it ‘talented little sh#ts’. The Berwick Boys (and boys they are, average age in the band is 18 I think!!!) delivered again.
Switching from manic full on wigging out Pixies style screams to one man piano tracks singer Derek steals the show as usual.
A friend of mine was tour manager for these guys a couple of years ago, and gave me a copy of their first album, which I though was ok but a bit dour. He insisted we go see them (and as it was free who am I to argue).
I was blown away by the singer’s passion and excitement. A real individual!
My Pal was absolutely right.
They RAWK!!! as G.I. would have said in the day.
The set was a little short, venue time constraints I think, feckin youth club bands again!!
We got most of the excellent new album ‘The Article’
‘No.5’, ‘I said pig on Friday’ ‘Saffron’ and opener ‘Feed Your Addiction‘all kicked ass.
And a couple of tracks off the first album ‘Shades Of Black’ which I came to appreciate much more after seeing them live the first time.
Then we get the slow strange laments on the piano and acoustic guitar (plus the added bonus of the Little Red Moped song and a song seemingly made up on the spot due to a laps in memory).
Like I said it all seemed a bit too short but worth much more than the measly £6 we paid in.
