I was gutted last time Bob Mould played, cause I missed him.
I discovered Mould in his Sugar years and didn’t hear his solo stuff or Husker Du stuff until much later on. But the first time I heard Copper Blue by Sugar I thought, man that guy has got a great voice and writes some great tunes. Never got to see him play with Sugar, and as Skiv said it had been 10 years since the man last played in bonnie Scotchland, so this was a treat for me.
First up, the support act. It was a guy named AM, I liked him, nothing offensive, just straight forward guitar music. What I really did like was that he had some sort of sampling effects pedal, which would allow him to play a guitar part, sample it, loop it then play the next guitar part over it, was kinda cool to see, and I hope he does well, despite a heckler shouting “Thank F*ck” when he announced it was his last song, I thought that he was a bit out of order as I felt that AM did a good show and wish him every sucess in the future.
Now on to Mould.
No band, no hi-tech sampling drum machine, just good ol’ Bob with his accoustic and electric guitar, and what a performance. He joked about getting through this as quickly as he could so that the Techno night could get started, but I could have happily stood and listened to him all night, the man is a ledgend.
Tracks were played from his complete Back Cat, Husker Du stuff, Sugar stuff and his solo stuff all got cranked out in his performance. My highlights were “Hoover Dam”, “Your Favorite Thing”, “If I can’t change your mind” and “Hardly Getting Over It” despite no backing band, they all still sounded great.
Skiv thought that he may play the exact same set as he did back in Febuary, but there were some slight changes, Skiv was wanting to video the Husker Du track, “I Appologise” on his new phone, but at that point in the set, we got another Sugar classic “The Act We Act” instead, so Bob kept us guessing.
I am glad that we were not standing in front of Bob as the amount of spit coming out of his mouth may have drowned us, but he is one of these people that when on stage has command pressence, when he is on, you MUST watch him.
For those of you not familuar with him, he is worth checking out, for those that have forgot about him, dust off the old records or cds and give ‘em a listen, you won’t be dissapointed.
The Liquid Rooms are a nice venue as well for anyone wanting to go to a gig in Edinburgh. If it is a chance to see the Mighty Mould, it makes it even better
