The Ouija Board
Guy’s good friend Chrissie, who is highly amused with the passion in which he puts debunking all things “Supernatural” asked him his views on Ouija boards. Having never taken part in such things, Guy consulted his resources and came up with the following
History
The Ouija board was first introduced in 1890 as a Parlour Game sold in novelty shops. Originally pronounced “wE-ja” after the Egyptian word for good luck, the definition was changed in 1892 by the game manufacturers saying that “Oui” was the French for “Yes” and “Ja” was the German for “Yes”.
The board usually consists of the letters of the Alphabet inscribed on it along with the words such as “yes”, “no”, “Goodbye” and “maybe” on it. A planchette (a slideable three-legged device) or other pointer manipulated by the “players” and used to answer questions out by spelling out them out via the inscriptions on the board. Somepeople believe that it is supernatural forces that have been contacted and are “guiding” the pointers; Sceptics however have a different explanation.
Ideomotor Effect
The Ideomotor effect describes the influence of suggestion on involuntary and unconscious motor behaviour. If you focus on the idea of making a movement (which you will do with the Ouija board), in all likelihood end up making a tiny movement without realising it. And if say you concentrate on the idea that your hand becomes light, you will find that you make tiny unconscious movements to lift it. Although you may be aware that these movements are happening, you may not be aware that you are Causing them! In the same way that a nerve repeatedly firing can cause a twitch that feels outside your control, so too and ideomotor movement (from idea + movement) will feel like it is happening out with your control.
Not convinced?
How many times have you or other people watch a football match, you see the top scorer for there team beat the defence, line up to shoot and as your Hero kicks the ball, you suddenly perform an involuntary kick, turning the table upside down and spilling the drinks and cheesy nachos everywhere? Why would you do this? There is no football in front of you? You have not been called up to play for any of the teams you are watching. Yet you saw something on a screen that you were so involved in, you soooo wanted the person to kick the ball, your mind instructed your body to perform a function that you were not consciously aware of.
Scientific tests by Psychologists, chemists and other members of the scientific community have shown that honest, intelligent people can (and do) unconsciously engage in muscular activity that is consistent with their expectations and that suggestions that can guide behaviour can be given by subtle clues.
In other words, it is not supernatural at all!!!
Expose your fraudulent friends
If after a few alcoholic beverages, your friend decides that it would be a great idea to contact the deceased, have a bit of fun while showing what bullshit it really is. Completely invent the life of a dead relative that has never existed and briefly talk about them, do not give too much away. Watch as the hilarity enfolds as your friends and yourself communicate with a figment of your imagination. Then once the “session” is over and everybody says how “freaky” that experience was, explain that you have in fact been taking the piss. Chances are they may fall out with you, but at that point you will realise that you are better off hanging out with less gullible people

I have to say that I did do the ouiji board with mates for about a month when I was 13. My school found out about it and we all got dragged in one by one to the assistant heads office for questioning. I’ll never forget being a ‘pooing pants’ heights of nervousness as my assistant head was a pretty scary guy….kinda looked like Nosferatu, anyways, that’s besides the point….I’ll never forget him leaning over the table and saying, “So Lorna, what do you know about this…….waajji board?” I nearly burst out laughing in his face…to this day that moment makes me laugh really loudly. *LOL* PS Nothing ever happened when we tried to contact the spirits…..
