Superman Returns
Ok before we begin, I feel that I must point out that I am not really a fan of Supes. I prefer my Superheros to be one or some or even all of the following 1) A tad unhinged 2) A bit of a dark personality 3) Rebelious 4) Maybe not as Moraley sound as they should be 5) And a strong believer of kicking the complete crap out of there nemisis. To me Supes does not fit in to these catogeries as he is to clean cut, indestructable and honourable for my likeing.
I watched Reeves as the man of steel when I was a kid, and really liked the films (with the exception of “Quest For Peace”) but never bought the comic, and wasn’t really fussed when they wrote “The Death of Superman” but I thought I would still give the movie a go.
Now, we all hated Singer (ok, well I did) for jumping ship on X-3, so maybe thats why I was a bit ancy about seeing this one, but I have to say he did a very good job. I actually enjoyed the flick from start to finish. He keeps true to the character and even the score of the movie contains all the familuar tunes.
The casting is good, new boy Brandon Routh does the blue and red costume proud, I think Reeves would have agreed that he was a good choice to replace him if he could. But for me Kevin Spacey steals the show as Lex Luthor, a totally inspired choice. Rest of the cast are good, but Spacey really stands out.
The action sequences are excellent, there are plenty of in-jokes and witty comments to keep the fanboy’s amused, and it is generally an enjoyable 154 minutes of your life.
I know I have a “no spoilers” rule in my reviews, but I was sorely tempted to put a criptic clue into this about something that happens, but as Enzo (who did not want to see the movie) got it quickly, I thought it may be a bit to obvious for everyone, so left it out.
I am not going to start reading Supes after seeing this but I do recommend for others to see.
