Conspiracy: The Iraq War
After watching SG1 and the first episode of the 2nd series of Battlestar Galactica, I stayed tuned to Sky One for there Conspiracy program.
Normally hosted by the excellent Danny Wallace and full of Crazy crackpots, Sky One decided on a different more serious presenter for this one.
Now those of you that know me know that i just love a good conspiracy theory, I mean you just need to check on the Duplicate Titanic one I posted in the early days of my site.
Anyway, back to the program. Yes lots of us were against the Iraq war, yes lots of us thought that it was just about Oil, yes lots of us knew that there were no WMD in Iraq, “so Guy”, I hear you say “what was the conspiracy theory?”
I had never heard this one before, but it hinted that the Euro was Saddams weapon of mass destruction. As it turns out, according to the program, due to American negotitations with the Middle East in the 70s, Oil can only be bought from most oil producing countries in American Dollars. It is called the Petrol Dollar. It goes like this say Japan wants to buy Oil, they need American Dollars, so they trade a brand new model of Honda to the Americans who pay them in American Dollars. The Japanese then use the American dollars to buy the oil from say, Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia then safely banks that money in……… you guessed it the American Federal Reserve. Thus American ecconomy is stable.
According to the show, in 1997 Sadam in one of his crazy ideas basically said “F*ck it” I am only selling oil in Euros. “Gasp” said the high heed yins in the states, “we can’t print Euros, the oil is being bought in Euros, so the dollars aren’t coming back to us, we need to trade to countries for Euros and we are in quite a lot of debt, what do we do??????? Our Ecconomy is Doomed!!!!!!”
Suddenly Iraq is on the hitlist, the US of A go in to topple the “Axis of Evil”, funnily enough securing control of the oil fields and turning the currency for buying Iraq’s oil back to Dollars.
Well, I am not saying that was why we went to war, but then again, it could make sense, still if you get a chance to watch a re-run of the program, it is an interesting watch.
It also left us with one final thought, we are currently taking in interest in Iran because of their current military ideas, but funnily enough they are considering turning the trade of oil to Euros as well!!!!!!!

Hmm, interesting. Don’t believe that it’s the reason though. Even if it were true, it would only serve to explain American war interests - It doesn’t explain UK interests (we stopped importing Iraqi oil in 1997), or Australian interests, etc… It especially wouldn’t serve to explain Italian interedts, as a Euro state.
Also, there’s one other thing it doesn’t explain - a question few give an answer to. If Blair was such a lapdog, why was he going on about regime change in 1998, 2 years before Bush was elected?
I was firmly against the war, but I haven’t found a satisfactory response to that question yet. We buy conspiracy theories, but we rarely deal with the actual facts.
Just a few thoughts

cheers for the input Noel, as I said, all views are relevant on this site!!
I just love a good theory though, you should check out the program when Skyone repeat it 1000000000000 times, if you get the chance.
My only rebuttle is that the show based it on America’s reasons, not the rest of the world. But it was American intel that was telling us about the WMDs. We followed suit.
I don’t claim to know much about world ecconomic, (or any ecconomics for that matter!) but i would think that if the American Economy collapsed, it would affect the rest of the world too.
Still, its just my thoughts too, lets discuss one day like civilised gentlemen over a glass of port or something!

The perfect opportunity, of course, being my Firefly party in March (provisionally 4th March), although you’ll have to keep the discussion in low tones so as not to disturb the watching…..

Ah, well, I’m in Norfolk that weekend. Still, if I see the programme is on again, maybe I’ll watch it.
