The Last ever MLG gig

Last night ended an era for a few of my friends and the Glasgow music scene in general as it was the last ever gig for Paisley born band My Legendary Girlfriend. I remember going to their first ever gig back Waxy Dargels back 1997 so I thought it was only appropriate that i was at the last ever gig also. Unfortuanelty due to ill health, I could not last the night and unfortuantely did not get to see them as I left early. But after talking to Ajay, i found out the gig went very well and the 13th Note was full of people there to witness the last ever notes of the band when I was there.

Caught the support acts though and as usual I was impressed with the orbital-esk sounds of the Ives and hope that they will continue to provide the Glasgow music scene with an alternative to guitar bands for many years to come.

Also on the bill were The Plimtons containing members of the band that have been friends with MLG for a long time. They were quite amusing with special guest appearances from Baroness Margaret Thatcher and their one and a half minute tribute to MLG’s back catalogue played on the Kazoo, pretty funny stuff!!!!

I am saddened to have missed MLG, they are all cool people that were really into doing what they did, despite the odds of not making it into the Mainstream. But the always did have a following and it was good to see the crowds get bigger at ever gig I went to.

Ok they were not really my cup of tea in terms of music, but I never pretended that they were, but the does not mean that I thought they were shit or anything. At a time when every band was trying to sound like Oasis, it was nice to see a bunch of folk try something different. They were one of the first bands that I new to try to incorporate samplers and drum-sequencers instead of live drumers to make the music that they did. They gradually changed there line up enlisting a keyboard player replacing previous Guitarist Neil Dawson and getting Ajay in to play drums giving them a much more fuller sound.

It is reassuring that it was geographical reasons that led to the end of the band, not the usual differences of opinions or petty squabbles, in the end McGazz moved away and the band felt that they did not want to carry on without him. Each member of the band brought their own unique influences and tastes into the band and lasted this long, not many band can boast that.

I hope each member goes on to do their own thing and wish them every sucess in the future.

Farewell sweet MLG! I only saw you once or twice, but I liked it. Especially the end-of-show shenanigans.
