Some Kind of Monster

In-between giging and having a hangover, I watched a DVD that Ajay had kindly given me a loan of. Now like most of us, I went through my rebellious Rock phase. I had the long hair, I moshed, I acted like no one understood me and above all else, the only thing that mattered was RAWK!. Don’t get me wrong I am not embarrassed by this, in fact I still like some rock stuff today, but back in the day, the album that said everything about rock to me was Metallica’s black album. To me that was the last good album that the ‘Tallica every released (I am sure there are those of you out there that may disagree!)

Now we all saw ‘A year in the Life of…..’ and being a disciple of RAWK at that point in my life thinking,”wow man this is soooooooo cool dude, yeah Rock and Mo Fo Roll” and then made the devil horns and air guitared ‘Enter Sandman’ etc.

Well fast forward 12 years to now. Metallica have released ‘Some Kind of Monster’ a documentry that looks at the band nearly fall apart. Its very entertaining, watching Hetfield and Lars moan at each other. We are even treated to seeing the band go to councilling to see if they can go on being a band. It basically start from when Newstead (wisely) leaves the band and how the band come to terms with this and the tension that slowly builds between Lars and Hetfield.

What is apparent right through the movie is that Kirk Hammet has no personality, they could have easily put a carboard cut out of him in the movie and you would not know the difference! Lars acts like a spoiled child that throws tantrums when he is told he cannot listen to the demo tapes after a certain time at night “No but , I want to, I want to, I want to” whilst jumping up and down on the spot. Hetfield, all I can say is that you see why he goes to rehab. Its also funny when you see Lars get the flack over the Napster stuff and there is even quite an amusing animation about this. (Does anyone else find it weird the Metallica continue to play the Download festival???)

Don’t get me wrong, I was entertained right through this movie, there is a cracking bit when Lars is talking to Dave Mustaine as part of his therapy, and watching the two of them, its hard to believe that this is two grown men with families!!!

I give this movie the thumbs up. Even if like me, you don’t listen to the ‘Tallica boys anymore there is loads of entertainment value. If you are still a huge fan you will get to see that your heros are a bunch of whining, childish egomaniacs, so are just like you and me.

enjoy

It must be questioned whether such a project is actually real or scripted.

If a band was to spend all that money setting up a documentary film its unlikely that it would be completely ‘fly-on-the-wall’. I suspect certain scenes are staged and the emotional outbursts, at times, a little forced.

After seeing Lars Ulrich cheering Fred Durst and Limp Shitzkit at an MTV concert I cant take anything he says or does seriously.

Sadly this film has proved a success and dont be shocked to see an Osbournes style MTV show featuring Metallica in the future.

I bet you liked the film Airheads, it was truly awful but as you were a rocker in those days I’m sure it would have been in your top ten films back then.

Hey Chrissyboy, Airheads, Wayne’s World, Spinal Tap and Bill and Ted were the best examples of Rock movies ever.

I bet you were into Styx, Poison and Winger!!!! You sissy!
